If You Have Ringing In The Ear, What Can You Do?

You can’t sleep, the ringing in the ear never stops, you’re frustrated, your relationship is suffering and you don’t know where to turn.  Sound familiar?  You probably have tinnitus and have searched for non-surgical ways to end the constant noise that seems to interfere with everything you do.  Thankfully, there are some natural treatments you can use to help stop your discomfort.

It is not understood what the cause or causes of Tinnitus are.  It is known to be a symptom rather than a disease or illness and is usually connected with some form of hearing deficit in the auditory pathways.  You can have tinnitus at any age, including childhood, and it will certainly affect the sufferers quality of life.

The noises that reflect this condition have been described as a humming, buzzing, clicking, whistling or ringing in the ear.  Actually trying to precisely describe the sound, or where it is coming from is quite difficult; one ear, both ears, the middle of the head?  The noise may have one or many components, may be sporadic or unbroken and can become more marked if you are stressed.

Using drugs such as Tricyclic antidepressants can help people cope better, but it won’t get rid of all the ringing in the ear.  They can also have some rather distressing side effects.  Taking sedatives may help you sleep, but they often make you grumpy and sleepy during the day.  Current studies are far from conclusive as to whether psychotherapy, behavioral, relaxation or biofeedback therapies work, but may help you cope better.  You might like to try using a small machine that is worn near the ear and emits a sound designed to mask the tinnitus noises.  Research on such treatment is inconclusive and replacing one sound with another doesn’t sound that useful!

Some suggest that taking antihistamines, B3 (although many sufferers actually have a B12 deficiency), extra zinc, muscle relaxants, ginkgo biloba may help.    Still more people advocate acupuncture, magnets, lasers or hypnosis.  While it is likely some of the above will work for some, published research suggests none really work for all people or work all the time.

Surgery may be also be considered, but only if there is a clear structural reason to account for the ringing in the ear.  This is without a doubt a drastic decision and you will need to speak to your doctors for advice.  However, surgery does not always work and the noises in the ear may return with vengeance.  What is the answer then?

In summary, if you suffer from ringing in the ear, you probably have tried many types of ‘cure’.  My advice is to try the natural approaches before you start messing with what you put in your body or surgery.  You may find something that works for you.
